To streamline the production of printed tourist guides by changing a paper-based process into a digital one.
Following discussion with a publisher, we identified the need to replace a paper-based and manual-entry process to collect and publish information for tourist guides.
The guides list properties available for tourists for Hotels, Self Catering, Bed & Breakfast, Camping, Caravan & Holiday Parks, along with a separate Pets friendly directory. Before we got involved, the process for collecting information involved posting a letter to each property owner which contained a printed booking form and a torn-out page from the previous guide showing their entry.
We agreed with the publisher to develop an online system where the property owner took responsibility of editing their own entry and provided online tools to help their sales team in lead generation.
The delivered online system allowed property owners to purchase entries, make payments and submit / update information on their property such as pricing, facilities available and images.
After this was complete, the property owner viewed and signed off an online proof for their entry to complete the process.
We also developed an extensive admin backend to assist the publisher in managing the data for each property, track progress, helped them with imports and developed a reporting engine for management overview.
The system exported XML for consumption by a typesetting system to automatically generate the printed guides.
The online system saved the publisher thousands on postage alone in the first year.
In the second year we developed an email marketing engine to assist them further in getting additional sales from the approx 30,000 registered users on the system.
